Welcome to “Industrial Safety System”

An industrial safety system is a countermeasure crucial in any hazardous plants such as oil and gas plants and nuclear plants. They are used to protect humanindustrial plant, and the environment in case of the process going beyond the allowed control margins.

As the name suggests, these systems are not intended for controlling the process itself but rather protection. Process control is performed by means of process control systems (PCS) and is interlocked by the safety systems so that immediate actions are taken should the process control systems fail.

Process control and safety systems are usually merged under one system, called Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS). Industrial safety systems typically use dedicated systems that are SIL 2 certified at minimum; whereas control systems can start with SIL 1. SIL applies to both hardware and software requirements such as cards, processors redundancy and voting functions.

There are 2 main types of industrial safety systems in process industry:[1]

  • Process Safety System or Process Shutdown System, (PSS).
  • Safety Shutdown System (SSS): This includes Emergency Shutdown-(ESD) and Emergency Depressurization-(EDP) Systems.

A third system also exists which acts as a barrier and contains the spray out of hot oil & gases from flanges, valves & pipe joints. These systems are popularly known as safety spray shields and flange guards. The use of spray guards is mandated by OSHA.

VISION

To establish Knowledge Centre for Industrial Safety as an environment for developing ideas, sharing knowledge so as to evolve as a safe Industrial workplace towards zero casualties or incidences and also to formulate procedure for interior activities to develop sustainable railway workshop in the country with high standards of POH quality, safety, value added services, efficiency, NIL failures, least Cycle Time, employee amenities by adopting the best technological practices, sound financial strategy and optimum utilization of resources.

WRS HISTORY

KNOWLEDGE CENTRE FOR INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

Wagon Repair Shop at Raipur was established way back in 1968 as combined Carriage & Wagon Repair Workshop at Raipur, now the capital city of Chhattisgarh state. It was initially built to cater to the Bengal Nagpur Railways which became SE Rly and subsequently, after trifurcation, SEC Rly of today. With time, coaching feed was gradually shifted to KGPW & MCSW and Raipur workshop became exclusively a Wagon Repair Shop with an annual target outturn of 6000 VUs for 2023-24.

Raipur workshop is located in the heartland of the coal and other mineral rich belt of Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of Orissa. This location gives it tremendous opportunity to contribute in freight operations of SECR. In fact, WRS/R played vital role in making SECR highest loading zones in Indian Railways.

WRS, Raipur has been entrusted the responsibility of creating knowledge center on "industrial safety". WRS, Raipur accepts this responsibility with ample enthusiasm.

WRS/R attends to almost all types of good stock except tank wagons for POH and NPOH apart from undertaking RSP and other specialized works such as midlife rehabilitation of wagon, retro fitment of twin pipe air brake system and retro fitment of BOXN into BOXNHS.

WRS/R has been consistently surpassing the outturn target set by Railway Board for many years in spite of working at an average manpower ratio (MPR) of 0.13 which is the lowest on entire Indian Railway. MPR is below the Railway Board's target of 0.25. Working on CLW pattern of incentive scheme, the productivity of workshop is 42-44% incentive earning. WRS/R has been successful in earning additional revenue from non-railway customers by attending POH requirement of NTPC, NALCO, SAIL, and BALCO etc. owned wagons and wheel worth more than 13 crore for last three years.

Raipur workshop has completed 50 years of glory and success. 2018 is golden jubilee year of the workshop. To meet the need for modernization of infrastructure and M&Ps to adjust technology & increase productivity a project for augmenting capacity to 6000 VUs was sanctioned. The layout and infrastructure of this workshop was initially created to handle 4 wheeler and UIC stock. Earlier in workshop were largely made by piece-meal expansion of the existing facilities
